There are many reasons one might consider Dallas cosmetic surgery: acne scars, tattoos, spider veins, normal signs of aging, and photo-aging (a result of time spent in the sun without proper UV protection). Cosmetic surgery is suited for patients who want to treat skin conditions that have adversely affected their appearances.
The American Academy of Dermatology and Dallas cosmetic dermatology experts at Wooming Dermatology recommend that you do your research and ask the following questions before choosing someone to do your surgery.
Is the provider a board-certified physician? If so, what is his or her education and experience?
This information can generally be found on a provider’s website, or this question can be answered with a simple phone call to the provider’s office. Generally speaking, if it isn’t stated on the provider’s website that they are a board-certified physician then chances are, they aren’t. While non board-certified providers may be convenient and less expensive, they may also be riskier. Non-physicians may be working with limited equipment and training and may not be equipped to handle complications or emergencies that may arise during a procedure. This can result in less than optimal results as well as significant health risks.
How many procedures has the provider performed, and are there any patient references or testimonials you can review?
Find out exactly how many of the procedures the provider has done and ask for some patient referrals you can talk to. Does the provider have true, un-retouched before and after pictures he or she can show you?
What are the risks and complications of the procedure?
As with any medical procedure, it’s also important to know all the possible risks or complications so you can make an informed decision, what kind of results you can expect, what the recovery time is and what to expect during the immediate post surgery time.
What kind of anesthesia (if any) will be used?
Ask what kind of anesthesia will be used, if you can expect any discomfort during or after the procedure and whether you will require pain medication afterward.
Where will the procedure be performed?
You will want to know where the procedure will be performed, if there are any pre-op instructions, how long it will take and when you can return home.
What results can you expect?
One of the most important questions for most patients if to find out when you can expect to see the final results of your procedure. You will want to know this in order to be able to plan when you will want to resume your normal activities.
How much will the surgery cost?
Be sure you know all costs associated with the surgery, including post-op visits that may be required. Most cosmetic surgery is not covered by insurance, but check to be sure your insurance provider does not offer benefits for cosmetic surgery.
The Dallas cosmetic dermatology offices of Dr. George Wooming encourage you to do your research, get your questions answered and make your final decision to simply determine whether the benefits of the surgery to improve your appearance outweigh the risks. If you decide they do, make sure you are choosing the best possible provider for your procedure.
